Toulouse - - Chapelle Sainte-Claire de l'Institut Catholique

Gérard Bancells (1994)
Philippe Bachet
Grand-orgue
This instrument was entirely imagined, designed, constructed and harmonised by the organ builder Gérard Bancells (born in Toulouse in 1968), who built the instrument between 1991 and 1994. The organ has 27 stops over two manuals and a pedalboard. The decidedly modern case resembles a huge ear of corn rising to the left, against which opens a corolla resembling a cup with the wooden pipes emerging from behind the great central triangle. As the expression box on the second manual testifies, the instrument was particularly designed for playing works by the German composers of the 18th and 19th centuries, but it offers many other possibilities, particularly due to its imposing foundation registers, the way in which several stops for the grand-orgue are divided between basses and trebles and its harmonic and classical plein jeu. The instrument is used for organ teaching by the Institut de Musique Sacrée and for Holy Office by the Institut Catholique. An organ concert is given each month and the organ is of course also played for the great organ events in Toulouse. While the organ was being built, new stained-glass was installed in the Chapel by the master glazier Henri Guérin.
