Toulouse - - Église-musée des Augustins
In 1766, an organ built by Grégoire Rabiny was accepted at the Eglise des Grands Augustins in Toulouse. During the turbulent times of the Revolution, the organ disappeared and the Convent became a museum in 1795. It was not until the 20th Century that the idea of installing a new organ here was put forward by Xavier Darasse, supported by the city council and Denis Milhau, the museum curator. Continuing the policy of building new organs of a variety of types in Toulouse, which had been inaugurated with the Italian organ of the Sainte-Anne Chapel, the promoters opted for the aesthetics of northern Germany and commissioned the great German organ builder Jürgen Ahrend. The project was completed in 1981. The instrument has thirty-three stops over three manuals and one pedalboard. The efforts of the project's founders and the talents of Jürgen Ahrend have made the Augustins' organ an architectural, aesthetic and musical success. To this day, the organ remains the only one built in a French museum, as well as one of the very few constructed in France by this brilliant organ builder. Musically speaking, the instrument is particularly well adapted to the northern German repertoire from composers such as Franz Tunder, Matthias Weckmann, Dietrich Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Vincent Lübeck, etc. Some of Johann Sebastian Bach's works could have been written for the Augustins' organ, among them those in the stylus phantasticus beloved of the Northern masters (Bach's juvenilia) the theatrical musical style involving a succession of contrasting episodes. This organ's elegant harmonisation also makes it an appropriate medium for several types of music from every period, including modern music.
