Chantres & Cantadors

Chantres & Cantadors is composed of singers educated in the famous Escolania of Montserrat and others from family traditions where multipart singing is expressed both in pub than in church galleries. The ensemble is born from a scientific and vocal meeting between Gascony and Catalunya.

Jaume Ayats holds a PhD in History of Art, specialising in musicology. His fieldwork focuses on multipart singing in the Iberian Peninsula and Western Mediterranean. Director of the Music Museum of Barcelona, he also lectures at the Higher School of Music of Catalonia (ESMUC) and at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He is singer and director of the multipart ensemble Nova Euterpe with which he performes in many countries and festivals.

Jean-Jacques Castéret holds a PhD in Arts, specialising in musicology. His fieldwork focuses on Occitan and Mainland France multipart singing. Director of the Institut Occitan Aquitaine – Ethnopôle, he is associate fellow at the Laboratoire ITEM of the Pau University. He is singer and director of the occitan multipart ensemble Balaguèra with which he performes in France and Europe. He also teachs in multipart master-classes (EsMUC, Bordeaux University, COMDT…).
